Cryotherapy: heal your muscles, freeze your titties off, or take off into space ?

cryo

So as you can see, there is no picture of my sad cold face while my naked body is in this coffin-freezer. Here’s the thing: I don’t *love* putting pictures of me up. Sometimes I will, I’d probably get more followers or something- but sometimes putting too many pictures of me feels “icky.” In yoga teacher training we talked about feeling “icky.” Anyway, I’m also actually a little shy. I didn’t want to ask the woman to take a picture of my cold ass because I don’t know her like that. She’s already seeing me vulnerable going into freeze-shock at -110 degrees celsius. You know? Maybe next time if there’s a next time!

So I’d been eyeing this Groupon for quite some time because I had heard people swear by cryotherapy. Part of me thought I would walk into the cryo chamber and come out as an invincible super hero. This didn’t really happen but I still felt better.

I’d also heard the research is split on if it even actually works. I HATE ice baths. The research is split on those too- that’s why I don’t usually do them. That being said, I think in some aspects this was effective (as a are ice baths.). They are supposed to help your muscles, help circulation, etc etc. You can look up the benefits on your own time while I get back to telling you about my experience freezing my titties off.

I bought the Groupon because I started marathon training at full speed for Chicago three weeks early to get ready for running the Ragnar New England on an ultra team. Then on week 1 I ran the 30 mile trail run which beat me up a little I’m not going to lie. I took a few days off and immediately went into speeding around. So this is how I ended up feeling like I got my ass kicked by week 4 out of 18 (actually basically week 7 out of 21 now). I’ll basically try anything once.

So here I am at Grace Aesthetics with my Groupon. I called them while I was sitting on my couch and got in an hour later. The women were very nice and I felt pretty welcomed. She had me and put on a bathrobe, mittens and slippers on and get in the chamber. She had me take off the bathrobe and toss it to her, while she gave me a second pair of mittens. Then the machine turned on proceeded to blast arctic frost all over my cold ass!

The first two minutes were OK. She stood there and talked to me the whole time so I wouldn’t pass out or die. She was a body builder, she likes to run, she does cryotherapy four times a week,… then I started to get dizzy and don’t remember what she said. At minute two I couldn’t even talk, and I almost asked her to get out. It was probably the longest three minutes of my life! At first I didn’t know why she was there to keep me busy- but being in there for three minutes in my own head would have been terrible! Luckily it finally ended and I got out of there. It took maybe 10 minutes to feel normal again.

I wanted to work out today before I decided on my verdict: which is it definitely made my muscles/connective tissues feel better. I would do it again in the midst of my training but only with a Groupon. $10 a minute is already kind of steep, forget $72! Also driving 40 minutes to Southbury was kind of a haul. That being said, this is like a band-aid and it would be more responsible to go to yin twice a week, which I’ll admit with my schedule I’ve been missing it. You could also probably just take an ice bath and be fine and a heck of a lot cheaper.

I didn’t come out of the cryo chamber invincible, or made of adamantium or anything. But I can tell a difference from how I felt this morning. I was SO sore on Saturday (ran 5), Sunday (ran 10) kind of yesterday (ran 14), and was kind of hobbling around the house this morning. Today in the afternoon I went to Triton to sprint. Steve had me run with sandbags, run some 400’s and mile repeats, and I still feel great. So I guess it worked!
